Management is the Key to a Successful Start-up Business

Posted on July 23rd, 2008 in Start Up by Admin

A key element to entrepreneurial success is choosing the right people to be part of your management team. In fact, angel investors and venture capitalists both view strength of the management team as the major determining factor in whether they are willing to make an investment in the company. But it is also important for an entrepreneur to have outside advisors he or she can trust and rely on, an accountant being one of these. Even a start-up company with little or no revenues needs to have a good accountant available, as well as an attorney who has experience with young businesses.

Accountants are important members of a company’s team. If you’re a start-up or small business you may not have the resources to hire an accountant full time. There are software programs that can do most of the data entry but it’s still a good idea to hire an accounting firm on a consulting basis to oversee your accounting systems, processing, and tax returns.

Attorneys are just as important, perhaps more so than accountants. An attorney can guide you to select the most appropriate way to set up your business. The best time to retain an attorney is before you need one. It’s worth the money to know that if something comes up you have a legal expert who is familiar with your company. Attorneys have valuable contacts with venture capital firms and private investors. They know what is reasonable in a private offering , what isn’t, and what must be included.

An attorney can also help you protect your intellectual property, trademarks, trade names and trade secrets. While it may seem expensive to have an experienced attorney on your management team it will avoid problems later.

Business Appraisers can tell you how much your business is worth and why. If you’re considering refinancing, that business appraisal can help you determine how much debt the company can carry.

If you’re considering selling your business the business appraiser can provide a ball park valuation. Of course the buyer will want to conduct their own due diligence and may even hire their own independent business appraiser, that’s to be expected. The appraisal you have completed gives you a bench mark to start negotiations.

A Business Plan Consultant can expedite the business planning process. If you’re looking for investors a well thought out concise business plan is critical. If you’re considering starting a company, a business plan will help you improve your chances for success and avoid making serious mistakes. You may be the only one who reads this plan, although you should have input from a number of other people with business experience. A business plan is an important ingredient to the success of a start-up business.

Using Consultants to provide services you need on an outsourcing basis can be much less expensive in the long run than hiring someone as an employee. The consultant probably will cost more on an hourly basis but you only need their services on a project basis. Consultants can provide programming, technical assistance, and communications expertise, just to name a few areas.

When hiring a consultant, or consulting firm, ask for references and check those references. A good place to start the search for a consulting firm is to ask your attorney and accountant for recommendations.

Become A Small Business Success Story And Take Charge Of Your Life

Posted on July 16th, 2008 in Start Up by kevin03

Jobs are no longer secure, even when you are working for a large corporation and have plenty of qualifications and experience. Many people think that if you are a good worker then your job will be safe. Unfortunately, this is not true. Over the past few years, hard working, loyal employees have been retrenched for a variety of different reasons, one of the most common being outsourcing to cheaper foreign labor.

As more companies choose this option, Americans (along with employees in other developed countries) are finding their employment options shrinking. Technology is also robbing workers of traditional employment as machines are able to do the same work more efficiently and at less cost. Loyalty and faithful service appear to mean absolutely nothing as corporations act with total disregard to the effects on individuals, families and ultimately society as a whole. The only way to be sure you won’t be fired is to be the boss. In other words, you have to start your own business.

However, this is easier said than done. Sadly, most small businesses fail in their first year. Don’t let this fact put you off from becoming your own boss, just let it be a warning that you need to establish a solid foundation in order to succeed in your own small business. The majority of small business failures can be narrowed down to some common mistakes that can be avoided.

The first big mistake is that many people just jump into small businesses with inadequate knowledge and preparation. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort to evaluate a business opportunity, market demand, competition, legal requirements, start up costs and ongoing costs before you open your doors. If you are willing to learn from other people’s mistakes and study how to create a small business that has the best chance to succeed, you can be one of the minority that succeeds.

Owning your own business is a major lifestyle change, so it is normal to question whether or not it is for you. Unlike a typical nine to five job which you can do and leave until the next day, your own business can make constant demands on your time, particularly in the early years. When equipment breaks down, it is your problem. When orders cannot be delivered on time, it is your reputation on the line. You will probably have to work late and on the weekends, at least initially. It is good to be fully aware of this so that you can decide whether or not you want to work for yourself.

If you decide to take up the challenge, you’ll find that there is plenty of information available to help you on your way. You can purchase business start up books at your local book store that guide you through the initial evaluation process, set up, accounting and management functions. Read through the list of contents at the front of some books before you choose the best one for your needs. Alternatively, you can choose to take a course designed to teach people everything they need to know about starting their own business. A mentor with significant business experience can also be a valuable source of information.

Even successful businesses didn’t happen overnight. Persistence, patience and flexibility are also qualities you will need to have in great supply. When you decide to start your own business, you need to be willing to be in it for the long haul. Rarely, will a business produce a living wage immediately or even quickly.

To give yourself every chance of success, it may well be a good idea to start your business while you are still employed and bringing in a steady income. It won’t be easy, but if you aren’t worried about how to pay your bills, you will be able to work steadily towards your business goals and achieve them gradually.

The Disadvantages Of Parents Working At Home And How To Effectively Get Things Completed

Posted on July 9th, 2008 in Start Up by kevin03

A certain stressful process is dealing with business at home whilst juggling children. It is generally a case of the parents ensuring that the children are amused so that they can complete some work, or the children distract the parents which makes their work much more difficult.

It is extremely challenging trying to keep children entertained and busy, especially if they are young. It is difficult enough for parents to attend to things in the home, never mind looking after children also. Children require a great deal of attention, and this is something that they should certainly be given.

Listed below are some points which will help parents and children to take advantage of each and every day whilst you are working at home.

1. One good tip is to get up earlier than the children. By doing this you will have an hour to prepare your day ahead.

2. When your children do wake up, enjoy this time with them. This is the time that children will enjoy loving and snuggling up to their parents. Eat breakfast together, as this it important for young children.

3. Ensure that the children are busy. Ensure that they have a routine of fun things to do and that you inform them that you need to work.

4. Those people that can afford a babysitter to help with the children find it much easier to undertake their work at home. It is not necessary to hire a babysitter for hours a day, every day of the week. A few hours during the week will give the parents a sufficient amount of time to concentrate on their work without interruptions.

5. Work flexible hours. Set yourself certain times of the day to do your work such as when the children are having their afternoon nap, or when they are happily playing.

6. Take your children to the park and allow them to play, whilst you sit on the park bench with your briefcase or laptop and undergo some work.

7. You could even involve your children with your work. They love to be little helpers to their parents, so you could get them to paper clip papers together, or hole punch papers and place them in a file. Of course ensure that they are old enough to not place paper clips in their mouths, or hole punch their fingers.

8. Tidy up your day once the children have gone to bed.

9. Ensure that your children come first. The choice was yours to work at home so that you can be with your children. Enjoy the chance to give them a kiss or a cuddle.

10. Enjoy your time working at home and being with your children. After all, all of the hard work that you are doing is for them at the end of the day.

Whatever tactics you decide to use when undertaking work at home, it is imperative that your children get priority over business. The idea of working at home is so that you can spend more time with the family. Do not become stressed by your business, your children will feel this and become stressed too. Enjoy your time at home with your children.

Incorporation Name Search: Important That It Works For Your Business

Posted on June 3rd, 2008 in Start Up by ramapati

Incorporation denotes the formation of a new corporate firm, whether for business or for non profit. The formation of a new firm brings about the birth of a new, separate, legal entity with its own assets, rights and liabilities.

Incorporation of your business is extremely beneficial as compared to a business run by an individual or partners. The benefits include limiting your liability to the net worth of the business. It means you are not personally liable if your business defaults. So when anybody sues your company you do not have to worry about your own possessions. Also, income tax rates are lower for limited liability companies than for single owner or partnership businesses.

When forming a corporation an incorporation name must be chosen for your company with careful thought. An incorporation name search will after all be the first decision that you make which attracts new potential customers to your business.

It is always helpful to the customer if the name clarifies what your company is and the business it conducts. It will then be easier when you send emails, or prepare directory listings and classified ads. Even your website will be easily understood.

A suitable incorporation name should ideally say what you can do for the customer, and why they should choose you. In less than four words! I know it is difficult, but well worth the effort. Try it.

Once you have a few incorporation name alternatives, run them by your friends and potential customers. Of course the fewer names, the better it is. But please, only initials, should be left to corporations such as IBM. In the beginning, people need to know what you can do for them and why you are the right choice to consider.

You may want to include your name in the company name. Do it if you think it will add value or bring customers to you. It is a big plus if your name is known in either the geographical are you want to operate in, or in the business you have chosen to do.

Once you have a list of 3 or 4 incorporation names, apply for name clearance from the registrar of companies in the jurisdiction you wish to incorporate in to see if no one else is using it. Your incorporation name search must give you an exclusive name. Once you have it, no one else can use it without your permission!

If it is a website then you need to search for a domain name and can use a host of available domain registrars. You can also find out more about registration offshore company in offshore jurisdictions of Seychelles, Mauritius or BVI.

It is possible that someone else with the same idea may have registered the name you want, and so you may need some alternatives on hand. Normally the company registration authorities will not allow an incorporation name search to end in names that resemble already registered names or even those which rhyme with them or those that can be mistaken for them. This not only prevents someone from copying a famous name to dupe customers, but also protects you from those who may want to ride on your success!

With the advent of the internet and the ease of creating websites, it is essential to have a web presence. This now means that your name should be exclusive to you not just in your geographic area of operation, but also globally via internet domain names! You can have different names for your business and your website, but that just increase confusion in your customer’s mind. So, life will be easier if your company name should be available for registration as a domain name as well.

An issue that has become increasingly critical is one of religious or faith or cultural sensitivities. Since 9/11, we have all become more sensitive to such issues and are seeing popular movements ‘banning’ company products based on their ‘behavior’. So incorporation name search is important, and can work for you.

You Need To Find Your Niche For Your Online Business

Posted on June 3rd, 2008 in Start Up by mdwealth

There are millions of people logging onto the internet every day from around the world searching for the next big thing to make money online, promote their business and product. The question that needs to be asked before you even think about entering the online world of e-commerce and marketing is “What is my niche?”. To begin, what does the word niche even mean? It relates to a position or area, that is exactly suitable for the person occupying it.

For the purposes of this article, a niche will relate to a particular topic that you are specially suited or interested in, with the goal of turning your interest into a income generating tool. From this interest you may develop a product, a service or information.

Often people see other people earning large amounts of money from their product and immediately jump on board to start selling the same or similar thing. This has resulted now with the internet being flooded with too much of the same. Take some of the auction websites for example. If you do a search for a computer item such as USB sticks or LCD monitors, or even an mp3 player you will end up with thousands of the same thing. In a highly competitive area it is very difficult to make any impact on the market without spending tremendous amounts of cash on advertising and even then it is hard to guarantee any real success.

The key to making any money online is to find your niche first. This has to be something that you are: 1) Interested in and 2) Have knowledge in this area that
other people do not. It also has to be an area which is untapped and is awaiting someone like you to launch in and make the most of the opportunity. If you can enter a market segment early and provide people with real value then you will find that it is much easier to develop a business that will last much longer than your competitors who try to jump onto the band wagon once they see what you are doing.

Countless people have made their fortune by identifying an area where a small amount of people were interested in, yet there was nothing to meet their needs. The more specific your niche, the more likely you are to succeed. Why is this?

Because you will have much less competition for search engines, and your audience will be specifically looking for you and your product. Your keyword advertising can be very specific, so you know if someone is visiting your site, then most likely they are interested in you and your product/service.

I am assuming here that you have decided you actually want to start your own online business, congratulations, but if you are still searching, then you can go through this process to decide if internet marketing is for you. The more knowledge you have, the more likely you are to make informed decisions, which will result in a better outcome.

So how do you actually work out what your niche is when you are starting up your online business? First of all, identify what area of life you are interested in and think other people would also be interested in. Do a search in Google and see what results you are presented with. This is often a good quick indicator if an area has already been covered. Have a look at the results and see if you could do a better job that would provide value to people. If there are more than 1,000,000 search results from your keywords then there is usually already a lot of content available. If you are presented with too much information then perhaps you need to look at making the topic more specific or choose another niche area that could work better.

There are several ways to perform market research on your potential product for a small amount of money. Firstly you can setup a small website proposing your product. You can advertise the website for a couple of weeks and monitor the visitor trends via many free analytics programs. Ask visitors for their expression of interest and collect their name and email address with the intention of contacting them if you proceed to sell the product. Your traffic to the site will depend on many things, but this is a good way to gain some insight into your potential customers without spending a large amount of upfront capital having a product developed and ordering an initial quantity. Even if you do not proceed to sell the product this small amount of money to do some research will be money well spent.

Another option is to write a survey and have people fill this out. This way you can see what people are after and ensure that you develop your product around their needs. At the end of the day, the more information and research you do, the more likely you are to succeed. In conclusion, it is important to remember that there are many different aspects in running a successful business. It is impossible to cover every area of internet marketing / product creation and niche business in one article, so I encourage you to keep researching and try different methods and see what works for you.
